Children rarely arrive afraid of the dentist. They arrive afraid of the version of it they have overheard. Most of the work of a calm first visit happens in the week before it.
Mind the vocabulary at home
Words like hurt, needle, drill and brave all suggest that something frightening is coming, even when used reassuringly. Describing the visit as counting and cleaning the teeth is accurate and leaves nothing to imagine.
Come early, and come for nothing
The best first appointment is one where nothing needs treating. A short visit to sit in the chair, ride it up and down and meet the team gives a child a memory of the place that is entirely neutral. Everything afterwards builds on that.
Let them keep some control
Choosing the flavour of the polish, holding the mirror, agreeing on a hand signal for a pause. Small decisions turn a passive experience into a shared one, and a child who knows they can stop things rarely needs to.
